What is That Black Stuff? What are those black streaks on your roof, you ask? It is a hardy type of algae called Gloeocapsa Magma that feeds on the crushed limestone used in asphalt shingles. Rain spreads the algae down the roof causing the black streaks. It is estimated that 50% of roofs are replaced simply because they look old or unsightly. Some estimates have also suggest that as many as 50% of roof replacements were not even needed, and could have been cleaned instead. Why should I clean my roof? Although these streaks do not mean you need to replace your roof, algae will cause it to rapidly deteriorate and fail long before it should. In addition, moss absorbs and holds water and lifts shingles over time. This can cause water and ice infiltration and become extremely destructive to your roof and home. Are there other reasons I should clean my roof? Black Algae causes more heat to be absorbed from the sun, increasing your energy costs when you are trying to cool your home. Keeping your roof clean will prolong the life of your roof and lower your energy costs, reducing your carbon footprint and saving you money. Will cleaning damage my roof? No. This process causes no damage to your asphalt shingles and will not void your manufacturer’s warranty, unlike high pressure cleaning with harsh chemicals. Make sure you know exactly HOW your roof is being cleaned no matter who you choose to do it. How long will my roof stay clean? After we clean your roof, we treat it so that it will remain algae free for up to two years. Should I clean my roof myself? Cleaning a roof involves a slippery surface that can be extremely dangerous and should only be done by a qualified, licensed and insured professional that specializes in this type of work. Top roofing manufacturers, as well as the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association, recommend safe, professional roof cleaning to remove algae, moss and lichen. Having your roof professionally cleaned and restored will help your roof last as long as it should and can save you a much greater cost in repair or replacement. After all, a 25 year roof should last at least 25 years! |
